Common Questions About Scheduling and Visits

Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?

Referral requirements depend on your insurance plan. Some insurance policies require a referral from your primary care physician for specialist consultations, while others allow you to self-refer. Our staff will verify your specific insurance requirements when you call to schedule. If a referral is required, we can work with your primary care physician’s office to obtain it.

We strive to accommodate new patient consultations as quickly as possible while ensuring Dr. Michaeli has adequate time for each patient’s comprehensive evaluation. Scheduling availability varies, but we typically can see new patients within 1-3 weeks. If you have an urgent concern, please inform our scheduling staff and we’ll do our best to accommodate you sooner.

We understand that circumstances change and scheduling conflicts arise. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please contact our office as soon as possible—preferably at least 24-48 hours before your scheduled time. This allows us to offer that appointment slot to another patient who may be waiting. Our cancellation policy will be explained when you schedule your appointment.

We accept most major insurance plans. When you call to schedule, our staff will verify whether we participate in your specific insurance network and can provide information about your expected financial responsibility. Even if we’re out-of-network for your plan, we may still be able to work with you, and our staff can explain your options.

Your out-of-pocket costs depend on your specific insurance plan, including your deductible, copayment, and coinsurance requirements. Our billing staff will verify your benefits before your appointment and provide an estimate of your expected costs. We believe in complete financial transparency and will clearly explain any costs before you commit to treatment.

Absolutely. We encourage you to bring a family member, friend, or advocate to your consultation if you’d like. Having a support person present can be helpful for asking questions, taking notes, and providing emotional support. Some patients find it beneficial to have another person hear Dr. Michaeli’s recommendations and explanations.

Initial consultations typically last 45-60 minutes, though some complex cases may require additional time. We schedule appointments to allow adequate time for comprehensive evaluation without feeling rushed. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete any necessary paperwork.

Many of Dr. Michaeli’s patients travel significant distances to access his specialized expertise. Our staff is experienced in working with out-of-area patients and can help coordinate any additional testing, imaging, or consultations needed in your local area. We can also work with your local physicians to ensure continuity of care. For patients traveling long distances, we try to schedule appointments efficiently and can sometimes accommodate multiple visits in a single trip if needed.

Yes, absolutely. Dr. Michaeli welcomes patients seeking second opinions and understands the importance of feeling confident in your treatment plan. We can review previous evaluations, imaging studies, and treatment recommendations and provide Dr. Michaeli’s expert assessment of your condition and available options.
